The music for the Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross was commissioned by a canon from Cadiz. In the Iberian town, it was a tradition to produce an oratorio for Lent every year. Haydn devoted himself to it with passion, despite the strict limits imposed by the commission, and in the end the result was of extraordinary beauty, so much so that the author himself elaborated various versions.
