Carl Orff's monumental masterpiece was staged in 2000 as a spectacular dance-theatre adaptation by the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company, Hungary's leading contemporary dance company. The performance vividly captures the common fears and joys of an imaginary barbarian community struggling for its survival and humanity through mysterious rituals until its last breath. The viewer enters the ritualistic life of a humanoid barbarian settlement trying to survive in the ruins of a civilization, facing its fears and struggling with fate. Fate sometimes brings love and joy, other times sadness or death. A girl, destined for a short life, can experience true happiness for a moment, when love makes her forget all the bad and makes her believe in a different, better life.
“But Fortune is fickle and cruel, indifferent to the beauty of the moment. Through disappointments, joys and fears, we can learn a lot about ourselves, our destiny and our humanity.” Tamás Juronics
