One of the greatest classics of nineteenth-century literature, The Lady of the Camellias was the model for a myriad of highly successful artistic products: ballets, operas, plays, films. Over the centuries, the impossible love between Marguerite and Armand has continued to repeat itself, becoming, perhaps, the greatest modern romantic myth.
But the novel by Alexander Dumas fils is based on a true story and, together with the yearnings and nobility of soul of its heroine, tells of the voyeurism and perversion of a society that vents its tensions on the woman's body. While the myth, repetition after repetition, became more cloying and sentimental, the novel - autobiographical - kept its brutality intact. Despite the reactionary and moralizing intentions of its author, The Lady of the Camellias is the merciless chronicle of a social murder, in which classist violence is disguised as romance. A story that continues to touch us more than we would like.
