Samia is based on a true story, by Samia Yusuf Omar, the young Somali athlete who died in the waters of Lampedusa as she was trying to reach Europe to qualify for the Olympic Games. Bolognino stages six bodies of different women to portray a broken life, the symbol of the inequality and emergency of the present time, where the freedom to choose who you want to be in many countries is still denied: «although we struggle to obtain this - says the choreographer in the notes - we are still not all the same. And yet we all yearn for this. We run. With this work I can't rewrite a life that I didn't live, but I can help Samia Yusuf Omar be remembered, as well as those who fight every day as they run, not only as victims. But rather as people who commit to choosing who they want to become. I've worked with the dancers by dwelling on our desires and the limits the world imposes on us to push the boundaries inside and outside the body and seek to pursue the freedom given by self-determination. An achievement that, despite the privilege of getting to look at the sea, still remains a dream, still utopia».
Adriano Bolognino was born in Naples in 1995. He won the 2022 Danza&Danza award as best emerging choreographer. The show Samia, produced by Körper, won the Rum for Dans call, while other of his works have been selected as part of many projects: Come Neve for Danza Urbana XL 23, Gli Amanti per Aerowaves 21 and Rua da Saudade for the NID Platform 21 and Call for Creation /Orsolina28.
