Operetta in two acts and three scenes by Jacques Offenbach, with live orchestra

The operetta that has gone down in history for its daring cancans and biting irony comes to our stage for the first time in the new production of the Compagnia Teatro Musica Novecento with a live orchestra. Composed by Jacques Offenbach in 1858 with a libretto by Hector Crèmieux and Ludovic Halèvy, the opera revisits, in a comic-satirical key, the mythological story of Orpheus’ descent into the Underworld to bring his beloved Eurydice back to life. However, it is not only eighteenth-century classicism with its stiffened divinities that is the object of this corrosive satire, but also and above all Parisian society of the Second Empire and the new bourgeois “nobility” of Napoleon III. In the grand finale, Offenbach’s most famous piece, the unbridled galop infernal that, with its skirt-raising and mischievous revelations, ignited the imagination of an enthusiastic audience at the end of the nineteenth century, still gives us all the joie de vivre of an era impossible to forget.
