Based on the 1952 film of the same name, the musical is set in 1920s Hollywood, during the transition from silent films to talkies. The story follows Don Lockwood, a silent film star, and his best friend Cosmo Brown as they make a talking picture.
The main problem arises when the vain co-star, Lina Lamont, proves unsuitable for the new talkies because of her shrill voice. To save their film, Don and Cosmo convince Kathy Selden, a talented young actress, to secretly dub Lina's voice. After several misunderstandings and hilarious moments, the truth comes out.
