The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel written in 1985 by Canadian Margaret Atwood, which returned to the news due to the great success of the television series "The Handmaid's Tale". Through the discovery of a recorded confession, we are captivated by the story of a handmaid. We don't know where it speaks to us from, what place and what time, but we recognize that it speaks precisely to us, women and men of this contemporary society. The handmaid carries within her the urgency of the burning question, our responsibility. It questions us about freedom, what we do with it and above all what women's freedom really is. It becomes a symbol, but also the nightmare of a possible near future, a warning that keeps us on our guard. In our experience as human beings we find ourselves picking up the signs of change without listening to them too much, delegating our responsibility to others and thinking that everything will always proceed well. Then when it is already late, we realize that the change has overtaken us and we have become victims of our own indolence.
