The success achieved in recent years by the inclusion of the Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu in a globally established band like that of the Norwegian Jan Garbarek is not the result of chance. For example, digging into the ECM archives reveals a gem such as Song for Everyone, from 1984, where Garbarek is in a very exotic company: in addition to Gurtu there are, on leave from the Shaktis, Zakir Hussain and Shankar. In the polyrhythmic colorism of the extrovert Gurtu, the ecstatic sound, similar to the human voice, of Garbarek's sax finds a perfect complement and an adequate contrast: a fusion of world elements of various origins arises, from terse Scandinavian melodies to spicy oriental rhythmic progressions .
