In "Murder in the Cathedral" is told the killing of Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury, at the hands of four knights sent by King Henry II. The theatre of the crime is the cathedral, but the real drama that the author, Thomas Stearns Eliot, tells is what takes place in Beckett’s conscience, committed to defending his convictions in front of a world that requires him to renounce everything he believes in.
The drama is from 1935, but it was built as a classical tragedy, an exemplary contrast between temporal power and spiritual power, with the acceptance of martyrdom by the Archbishop to represent one of the highest pages of tragic literature of all time. Moni Ovadia, great interpreter of the Jewish tradition and the highest representative of Yiddish culture in Italy, actor, writer, director, musician, is entrusted with the desolate song of the English hero "invaded" by the Christian faith, the absolute lament of a man undecided between abnegation and incarnation of Christ, between the yearning for power and absolute faith in God.
