Billy Cobham is one of the historical figures of fusion drumming; indeed, in some ways, he can be considered the father of that style of drumming, from the late 1960s (with George Benson) and then, especially, in the early 1970s with Miles Davis (starting with the last recording session of Bitches Brew) and the great adventure of the Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin. His Caribbean origins (he was born in Panama) and his immediate contact with the burgeoning jazz-rock scene in New York, combined with his impressive technique on the instrument, gave rise to a unique polyrhythmic power. His discography documents an exorbitant amount of activity, and calls from the greats of fusion almost overshadow his work as a bandleader. Now over 80 years old, once seated at his very personal double bass drum kit, Cobham continues to be sought after by an audience of enthusiasts who, despite all the great drummers who have passed him by over the last half-century, continue to see his powerful figure almost as that of a living legend.
"• As composer and producer of this project my objective is to present a unique musical personality for the followers of my productions to identify with. I seek to present a sonic mirror of who I am, where my musical journeys have taken me as I present reflections of my past exploits through selections from my musical portfolio that I have accumulated over the past 50 plus years of my career.
• In the months to come the Quintet with offer fresh ideas and approaches from the individuals in the band who contribute to the collective sonic picture that represents the quintet as a unit. I look forward to sharing sound clips with all who provide us the chance to musically converse and interact with you". WILLIAM E.COBHAM
